Where has the sounds gone?

After my first race, during which the only sound was the marker bell, I suggested it would be great to hear the wind, wages etc.
The next race it was all there! Wind, water, rigging groan etc. It was fantastic!
However, all my subsequent races have reverted to silence apart from just the bell. Am I doing something wrong?

What platform are you playing on?
When I played on Steam I noticed that a lot of the environmental sounds were not audible if the game window was not in focus on the desktop.
