Boat v race time

Just raced twice and both times the in boat time was behind start line time/start signal.
I crossed the line as per my boat time on the first race and completed all successfully but lost around 10 seconds as the start boat is the real timer.
Second race I followed the start boat timer and incurred a false start :(
I did not use the fast forward function.

Hi Jean,
We have a "handicap" system where your past performance influences when you can start. ( https://www.sailing.org/classesandequipment/offshore/ratings_and_handicap_systems.php )
Looks like in the race you mentioned you had 9s handicap. meaning, you need to wait 9 seconds before you can actually start racing.
This system means, that sailors of different skills can race together and still have an exciting race towards the finish line ( as on average, even with handicap, you should be able to catch-up with the pack towards the end of the race )
Hope that explains things.
