Handicap in racing
complete
Nelson Livingston
so if I'm 11 seconds back and had an 11 second handicap. now i have a 12 second handicap and today's race is shorter. how exactly is the handicap figured?
Greg Dziemidowicz
Nelson Livingston: it's more or less: looking back at your last couple of races ( so not just yesterday ), how far away was your result from "median race" time.
So even though "yesterday" you may have a "bad" race, if a race "7 days ago" was even worse, your handicap may look like it's going up, even tough your race yesterday was not great.
Basically handicap is trying to make everyone "finish" at the same time, so that we are getting an exciting finish line approach and everyone has a shot at winning the race.

Greg Dziemidowicz: so part of my question was if it looks at the length of race not just my placement? so the longer the race the longer the the handicap?
Greg Dziemidowicz
Nelson Livingston: At the moment it's not looking at length of the race - it's something we probably should improve.. ( as there are wired effects, like a huge handicap in a short race.. ).
Nelson Livingston
that's my exact point. that the length of the race should be part of the equation.

Moving this to completed for now. Feel free to create a new card with specific suggestion to handicap system.

As it works now handicap is flat. It needs to be based on race segments. So handicap is expressed as seconds per leg. 1,2,3 courses has less handicap than 1231313.

Kevan A: Hi Kevan, yeah, it sounds reasonable. I had a look at recent 1,2,3 race - it looks like SanMan, who had 41s handicap, was still #2 and within 0.5s from #1.. so it more or less seems to work? Let's keep an eye on it: https://www.marineverse.com/marineverse-cup/race/_BofxQTohVuvRbzlODdAQshU5o2z0reHWSutSc7tHv8Py1A?details=true
( reminder for everyone: intention of the handicap is to make the race harder for the best players - you have to make less mistakes and sail better then the rest ).

Sounds good, my tacking skills leave a bit to be desired.
Also, I've never received my email validation when I try and go to multiplayer on Quest Beta.

Initial implementation: Based on their past performance, regular players are forced to start the race slightly later then the rest. This should make the finish line exciting, as best players will be catching up to "new players" on the last leg ( if handicap works as expected ).

Greg Dziemidowicz: see my new comment in this feature. Make handicap be seconds per leg.
